I came to stone sculpting after a fair bit of experience working with ceramics and some painting and drawing. Almost from the moment I picked up the stone tools I realised I had found something that was going to consume me. Put simply, I love every moment of working with stone, from getting an idea to work on, through deciding which stone to use, working out how to approach the piece and finally implementing it. I grew up by the sea and have lived near it for most of my life. I also spent a number of years working in the shellfish industry. So my mind is full of the forms you see in and near the water. Walking and cycling through the countryside or pottering in the garden provide yet more subject matter., and as a trained engineer with an interest in physics and cosmology, I am familiar with many of the beautiful and fundamental shapes and patterns from both the real world and theoretical models. Most of my sculptures are based on natural shapes that to me are flowing and calming. I attempt to strip away detail and try to encapsulate the essence of the forms that evoke in me, and hopefully in others, a mostly pleasing emotion or reaction. All my original sculptures are carved from a variety of stones. Some are sold as unique sculptures. Others are available in small limited editions in a variety of resins, such as bronze, white marble and aluminium. I accept commissions where the required work is in harmony with my artistic style. See the News page for information about the exhibitions and galleries I’m involved with.
